When I first moved to Las Vegas and didn't have any money, the definition of luxury to me was to go to Fresh & Easy and buy a princess cupcake. It was a pink cake with white "royal" piped icing and edible gold glitter dusted on top. I'd sit in my car in the parking lot of the store on the east side, eating the cake in tiny segments so it would last, contemplating what on earth I was going to do with my life. It might sound amazingly naive but to me, that extravagant $5 cupcake taught me a lot about hope and believing in something better is possible, and in the beauty of this portrait and her strange antique frame I find that younger version of myself. Sitting on the east side, just looking for the beauty.
