This is the original story of Beach Town Jewelry
I heard you lose a lot of jewelry. It made me giggle. I’ve never had nice jewelry because I too know I will lose it. I have a giant diamond wedding ring - a whopping $40 from amazon because I sincerely do not care. I literally had one nice ring once that I dropped in Lake Michigan. And then last week my $90 diamond nose stud got ripped out of my face when I thought I could ride the wrong wave. On the shore I was laughing about being flipped three times and slammed into the sand, wondering out loud how much damn fine jewelry people have lost is on the bottom of the ocean.
I wanted to paint the light that you bring to this world through your heart as your best friend Katie has experienced it for fifteen years. The beautiful friend that you are, the way your giant heart impacts the people that you love and everyone around you. To me that feeling visually is like a wavelength of light. I wanted to paint you a wavelength of light as it hits the ocean for your birthday as a gift from Katie so that you can feel the beauty that you radiate outward.
Sometimes on the good days when I am in the ocean beyond the break, I will watch the rainbows come up in the backsplash of the water of the crashing waves. I look up at the sky and wonder how on Earth I ended up so lucky. I really think it is the highest vibration of an experience in this life I have had, watching the light hit the ocean and make a perfect rainbow, even if only for an instant. Those instances are mine and mine alone, just like what you give to others is so beautiful but yours and yours alone. I am proud I was able to re-create this visual for your home, to see every single day, so that you can remember the light, beauty and love that you extend to so many, so selflessly, in so many various ways.
Maybe all of the jewelry we lose we only lose so that we can imagine something greater and eventually, find just that. You have built a beautiful life and family in Ocean Beach so of course, we were going beach town mermaid theme. I can’t even tell you the respect I have for people that make it work right by the water in Southern California. Maintaining a life out here to me tells a story of your determination and strength, so it was important that “Beach Town” was in the title. I hope this art lights up your home and heart for decades to come. You are loved, you are love, and total perfection. And you live by the beach. I mean what else could someone want? Personally, for me, it was all I ever wanted. Now that it is what I have I don’t even know what to do next. So I make another painting. It’s like pulling scarves out of a hat. I never know what will happen next. But it is always a gift of learning and appreciation.
Happy Birthday. I hope it is the brightest light wave of a year yet, with every color and depth, and in this work, you feel a reminder that everything we think we lose actually comes back to us eventually, in one form or another.
